Fighting food waste with 3D machine vision: Data Capture

A significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions are generated by food waste. According to UNEP´s Food Waste Index Report 2021, a vital step in the right direction is collecting data and measurements from actual waste. Moving towards a sustainable future, we join the collective efforts by applying our 3DQ technology to reduce the data transmission and storage capacity needed when monitoring discarded food in the catering industry.

Together with our partners Orbisk and Eaternity, we are very excited to play a key part in the Food Fight project, influencing more sustainable practices by increasing the use of 3D data analysis. At this point, we are combining technologies to be integrated at customer locations for a cutting-edge solution to save food. Here, waste is measured by capturing both colour and depth images, seen as a point cloud below.

However, transmitting and storing datasets, such as the pepper above, is resource-demanding as the resolution gets higher and the imaging sequences longer. To reduce this problem we apply our technology to greatly reduce the capacity needed when transporting and storing large datasets. 

By combining technologies, we are headed towards a solution that requires no extraordinary interaction, increasing the likelihood of data collection. Together with our partners, we can collect accurate data in a seamless fashion, moving towards responsible consumption and production.
